Did you know that at the 2022 Manufacturing Indaba at Sandton Convention Centre, we impressed the crowd by bringing in a portable assembly press to demonstrate the ease of making adaptors to the public?
In line with our vision to increase job creation for demographics typically side-lined in the past, the process is simple enough for any class of labour to assemble our products easily. This opened a new window of opportunity for disabled and unskilled workers to earn a living.
Fulfilling the promise of Ubuntu, including people with disabilities, is in the DNA of our business. This means that the assembly process was designed specifically to include people with disabilities and those without skill sets, as demonstrated so efficiently at the Indaba.
Impressively, the current capacity in our factory can produce up to 500 000 electrical products per month, enabling us to supply JSE-listed companies and South Africa’s largest electrical products distributors and retailers. Our company is also one of the only remaining plug manufacturers in South Africa that competes with well-subsidised factories out of China. We have manufactured and sold over 300 million products since our inception.
Founded in 1999 by David Shapiro, we have a 23-year track record under the LESCO Manufacturing name. However, our roots can be traced back to 1958 to Switch King – a company founded by Natie Shapiro, David’s father. We continue to grow and expand, now under the leadership of David’s son, Jonathan Shapiro, in his capacity as CEO.
Uniquely positioned to be a different company to each stakeholder, we set ourselves apart from our competitors. To the retailers, we are a preferred and trusted supplier. To the homeowners, our brand represents safety and high-quality electrical products. To the youth and traditionally unemployable, we are an employment opportunity. But, most importantly, while established at the foot of the African continent, we are known as a continental driver of sustainable change.
We provides stakeholders with a glowing reflection on their Corporate Reputation in terms of BBEEE and CSR – and actively support the establishment of a new, more impactful way of doing business, as demonstrated throughout the company’s history.

With our CEO Jonathan at the helm of this ever-growing organisation, it hasn’t been an easy road for him. While LESCO may seem a family-run business, did you know that Jonathan worked his way up from shelve-packing at the LESCO warehouse, sweeping floors, and assembling products on the assembly line?

Spending time in every department of the company played a pivotal role in preparing our CEO for leadership, responsibility, and continuation of this company’s unique legacy.
“We believe that the best businesses are created as a means to fulfil a deep human need by discovering solutions to fundamental problems that seemingly did not yet exist. This is LESCO’s legacy.” – Jonathan Shapiro.
